Skillet Review

Skillet – Rise
June 25, 2013
Word/Atlantic

With eight prior albums, Rise is quickly becoming my favorite Skillet album yet. Now, for many this album came with some changes that many fans were not open to. Being a “concept” album, something different is to be expected. With that being said, to me this album doesn't sound like a “concept” but more of a well planned out arsenal of killer songs. Some stand out tracks, including “Good To Be Alive” “American Noise” and “Battle Cry” may not be what Panheads (Skillet's devout fans) have come to expect over the years. Let me stress that they aren't overly major changes, but rather growing talent. In the case of Rise, it works and it works really well. Thus why this band has seen such a huge success.

And in a world with secular pop flooding the Billboard charts, these Christian hard rockers had found themselves debuting on the charts at number 4 with Rise. It is definitely clear that Skillet has managed to reach the masses with their unique sound. And while we are now over halfway through 2013, I can definitely say that Rise is a album of the year contender for me.

Norma Jean Review

Norma Jean – Wrongdoers
August 6, 2013
Razor & Tie

With this sixth studio album from metal legends, Norma Jean, the band continues to show maturity and true musicianship. Wrongdoers is the second album on Razor & Tie since leaving Solid State Records and much like the changes that showed in 2010's Meridonial the band continues on with a mess of talent. Although change is good, there is plenty of good old Norma Jean style and energy to go around that fans have come to expect and love. Continuing to push the limits of the genre while still staying   relevant, Norma Jean are one of the few bands that can successfully pull that off. So with a little of the old and a little of the new this beautiful blend of raw and emotional tracks will not be one to overlook. There is still plenty of albums yet to come out this year, but, Wrongdoers will be a tough contender to face for one of the best metal releases of the year.
